The Project Brief
For the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, the Tourism Board wanted to adorn the walls of their VIP suites with artworks that celebrated Singapore as a city in nature. In addition, the board requested that the theme for the interior design of the suite be an homage to local heritage whilst being forward looking.
Given that the F1 circuit was a night race in the downtown core of the island city, it was recommended that the space have a unique aesthetic element that embraced the changing light when the sun set and the race began.
The Concept
The central Idea: To create visual openings along the wall that invited green spaces into the VIP suite.
These entranceways became a welcoming portal into iconic landmarks in Singapore that embraced urban gardens and feature a mix of older heritage buildings (e.g. Shophouses / black and white bungalows) and contemporary structures (e.g. Jewel / Park Royal Pickering). The frames used for each of these openings drew references from familiar architectural forms, from the archways at the Raffles Hotel to the iron columns of the gazebo in the Botanic Gardens.
All featured animals and plants are species that are endemic to Singapore or are commonly found on the island.
To light up the room at night, each of the 4 visual openings functioned as a lightbox with outer botanical elements attached as a separate layer to add dimension. The lightboxes were placed at gaps between the buffet tables. Connecting these lightboxes were wallpaper designed to enhance the colonial inspired furnishings and create an illusion of natural elements creeping along the walls of the suite.
